In its first twelve years, Kein & Aber Verlag has established a distinctive presence on the German publishing scene, with an international mix of beautifully produced original literary fiction, non-fiction and audiobooks. Based on our appreciation of classic gems, literary comebacks as well as an eye for the new and unexpected, we have created anexciting, bold, and very enjoyable list. Our authors’ voices sparkle with wit, intellectual honesty and the talent to tell great stories in a unique and passionate way.
Our main focus is on German and foreign literary fiction of the highest quality. We are proud to be the German-language home of great British and American writers such as Truman Capote, Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Flann O’Brien, Steve Tesich, Budd Schulberg, André Aciman, Ethan Coen, David Nicholls… In recent years, we have also introduced new European voices – for example, the brilliant social satires of Spanish author Carlos Eugenio López, or French novelist Gilles Leroy, whose breakthrough novel “Alabama Song” about Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald has won the prestigious Prix Goncourt. One of our recent acquisitions is a comic novel by the bestselling Israeli novelist and film director Ilan Heitner.
We not only publish but are committed to nurturing our young authors. The German novelists Anja Jardine, Robert Seethaler, Ariane Grundies, Richard Reich and Philipp Tingler are among our many discoveries, and we look forward to following them, and others, on their literary journeys. We are also excited to publish the mature talents of Harry Rowohlt, Gerhard Polt, and many others.
We will soon be adding international crime fiction to our list (including noir novels), in the European tradition of crossing the intriguing boundary between commercial and literary thrillers. And in true Kein & Aber spirit, we are keen to publish detective fiction with a humorous, irreverent angle.
Our interest in narrative non-fiction is also growing. It will have the same qualities as our fiction: literary voices and strong stories about social and emotional aspects of contemporary life.
We will continue to have fun with unusual book projects, such as the collection of notes entitled FOUND by Davy Rothbart, or the very popular TIDYING UP ART by Swiss cabaret artist Ursus Wehrli.
By the way: Kein & Aber is the only publisher with its own 24 hour internet radio! Our readers can tune into (and purchase) superb recordings of great books, like A.A. Milne’s “Winnie-the-Pooh”, Kenneth Grahame’s “Wind in the Willows”, or Laurence Sterne’s “Tristram Shandy”, read by prominent authors and artists.
We hope you enjoy our books and website.
With warmgreetings from Zürich,
The Kein & Aber Team
